Why Particle Tracing for Fluid Flow can not used in dense flow model?

It is said that particle tracing module can only be used in disperse flow, rather than dense flow. I want to know why it can not be used in dense flow? I'm trying to build a model of water migration in sand particles. Is there any other model which is suitable ?
