I am trying to simulate free convection in a water glass and I am required to select Discretization section in the Model Builder. But this is not available in the Model Tree for COMSOL 4.4 as stipulated in the COMSOL 5.3a sample file.

Where can I locate this node/settings in COMSOL 4.4?

Under model builder, click on the eye icon and check "Discretization"
