Manipulating selections to create geometry

Hi,
Is there a way to select all the domains automatically to create their union instead of having to select them individually. I can use CtrlA in the GUI but when i convert it to a m.file, it still shows up as a definition that selects all the objects individually.
In a slightly different situation, would it be possible to create a geometry that is the union/intersection of two existing selections? I have checked that 'union', 'intersection' 'compose' etc. does not like the selection names as the arguments, they want the objects defined individually.
Thanks.
